Atmospheric neutrino anomaly without maximal mixing?

چکیده
We consider a pattern of neutrino masses in which there is an approximate mass degeneracy between the two mass eigenstates most coupled to the nm and nt flavor eigenstates. Earth-matter effects can lift this degeneracy and induce an effectively maximal mixing between these two generations. This occurs if ne’s contain comparable admixtures of the degenerate eigenstates, even if they are not large. This provides an explanation of the atmospheric neutrino anomaly in which the ab initio introduction of a large mixing angle is not required. To test this possibility we perform a detailed analysis of the 52 kiloton-year SuperKamiokande data, and we find that in a large region of parameter space the corresponding confidence levels are excellent. The most recent results from the CHOOZ reactor experiment, however, severely curtail this region, so that the conventional scenario with nearly maximal mixing angles, which we also analyze in detail, is supported by the data.

The atmospheric neutrino anomaly without maximal mixing ?
We consider a pattern of neutrino masses in which there is an approximate mass degeneracy between the two mass eigenstates most coupled to the ν µ and ν τ flavour eigenstates. Earth-matter effects can lift this degeneracy and induce an effectively maximal mixing between these two generations. This occurs if ν e 's contain comparable admixtures of the degenerate eigenstates, even rather small on...
متن کاملTexture of a Four–Neutrino Mass Matrix
We propose a simple texture of the neutrino mass matrix with one sterile neutrino along with the three standard ones. It gives maximal mixing angles for νe → νS and νμ → ντ oscillations or vice versa. Thus with only four parameters, this mass matrix can explain the solar neutrino anomaly, atmospheric neutrino anomaly, LSND result and the hot dark matter of the universe, while satisfying all oth...
متن کاملRobust flavor equalization of cosmic neutrino flux by quasi bi - maximal mixing ⋆
The observed L/E flatness of the electron-like event ratio in the Super-Kamiokande atmospheric neutrino data strongly favors a quasi bi-maximal mixing matrix. This situation is here exploited to understand the numerical results of Yasuda on the high energy cosmic neutrino flux. In agreement with the Yasuda result, we analytically show how the quasi bi-maximal neutrino mixing makes the high ener...
متن کاملEffects for atmospheric neutrino experiments from electron neutrino oscillations
The minimal interpretation of the atmospheric neutrino data suggests that the muon neutrino oscillates into another species with a mixing angle close to the maximal π/4. In the Exact Parity Symmetric Model, both the muon and electron neutrinos are expected to be maximally mixed with essentially sterile partners (ν ′ μ and ν ′ e respectively). We examine the impact of maximal νe − ν ′ e oscillat...
متن کاملNeutrino masses and mixings from an anomaly free SMG × U ( 1 ) 2 model
Neutrino masses and mixings from an anomaly free SM G × U (1) 2 model. Abstract A natural solution to the fermion mass hierarchy problem suggests the existence of a partially conserved chiral symmetry. We show that this can lead to a reasonably natural solution to the solar and atmospheric neutrino problems without fine-tuning or the addition of new low energy fermions. The atmospheric neutrino...
